Taurine for Dogs and Cats: Why This Amino Acid Matters

We’re almost certain you’ve heard of this one – taurine!

Taurine has been having its moment recently and for good reason. This important amino acid-like compound plays a role in heart health, eye health, nervous system function, bile acid production and other essential processes in the body.

But why is taurine so important for our pets, and should you consider adding it to their diet?

Taurine requirements in cats and dogs

Taurine is especially important for cats, as they can't produce enough themselves and rely on their diet to provide it. Without adequate taurine, cats can develop serious health issues, including heart muscle dysfunction and retinal degeneration that can affect their vision.

Dogs are different. Most dogs can produce taurine from other amino acids, including cysteine, provided their diet supplies the necessary building blocks. However, some dogs may have a reduced ability to produce enough taurine, depending on factors such as breed and diet.

For dogs, taurine intake may deserve particular attention when the diet is low in animal-based ingredients, contains substantial amounts of certain plant proteins or fibre sources, or isn't properly balanced. Some breeds also appear more susceptible to taurine deficiency.

It's worth remembering that a diet being grain-free or highly processed doesn't automatically mean it's deficient in taurine. The overall nutritional composition matters.

What does taurine do in the body?

Taurine contributes to several important functions throughout the body.

Heart health

Taurine supports normal heart muscle function. In cats, taurine deficiency is a well-established cause of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a condition in which the heart muscle becomes weakened and enlarged. Taurine deficiency has also been associated with DCM in some dogs.

Eye health

Taurine is essential for maintaining normal retinal function. Cats are particularly vulnerable to taurine deficiency, which can cause progressive retinal degeneration and vision loss.

Digestion and bile production

Taurine helps the body form bile salts, which are essential for digesting fats and absorbing fat-soluble nutrients. It also supports normal bile acid metabolism.

Nervous system function

Taurine plays a role in normal nervous system function and helps regulate processes within cells, including calcium balance.

These functions make taurine an important nutrient to consider when looking at the bigger picture of your pet's nutritional wellbeing.

Natural sources of taurine

Taurine is naturally present in animal-based foods, particularly seafood, meat and organ meats. Muscle meat and organs can contribute taurine to the diet, although the amount varies depending on the food and how it's prepared.

Plant ingredients generally provide little to no taurine, so diets relying heavily on plant-based ingredients need to account for this when formulated.

Cooking and food processing can also affect taurine availability. This is one reason why a balanced diet needs to be formulated with the finished food's nutrient content in mind, rather than relying on ingredients alone.

For cats, it's particularly important to feed a complete and balanced feline diet that supplies adequate taurine.

Should you supplement your pet with taurine?

Taurine supplementation may be worth considering when a pet's diet doesn't reliably supply enough taurine, when there are particular nutritional concerns or when additional support has been recommended as part of an individualised wellness plan.

It's especially relevant to consider taurine intake in cats eating home-prepared diets that haven't been properly balanced, as well as dogs with dietary or breed-related risk factors.

For pets with known heart concerns, taurine may form part of a broader nutritional support plan. However, supplementation isn't a substitute for a complete diet, and not every dog or cat needs additional taurine.

The amount required depends on the individual animal, their existing diet and their nutritional needs. It's important to consider the whole diet when deciding whether supplementation is appropriate.
