Flower Essences for Dogs: Emotional & Behavioural Support

Flower essences for dogs are traditionally used to support emotional wellbeing and help animals cope with changes, stress and challenging experiences.

Dogs can be sensitive to changes in their environment and routine. Moving house, spending less time at home, introducing a new baby or pet, separation, changes within the household and past trauma can all influence a dog's behaviour.

Signs of emotional stress may include changes in behaviour, increased anxiety, clinginess, fearfulness, irritability or inappropriate toileting.

Flower essences can be used as part of a holistic approach to supporting your dog's emotional wellbeing, alongside appropriate training, environmental changes and other forms of care.

Emotional and Behavioural Changes in Dogs

Changes in behaviour can sometimes occur when a dog is experiencing stress or adjusting to a change in their circumstances.

For example, a previously house-trained dog may begin urinating indoors or toileting in unusual places following a significant change at home.

However, sudden changes in toileting or behaviour should not automatically be assumed to be emotional. Physical health problems can also cause behavioural changes, so it is important to consider the possibility of an underlying health issue.

For dogs experiencing ongoing emotional or behavioural difficulties, our Naturopathic Consultation for Emotional Issues can help identify an individual approach.

Flower Essences for Common Emotional Issues

Flower essences are traditionally selected according to the emotional state or personality of the individual animal. Some of the essences commonly used for dogs include:

Chicory

Traditionally used for possessive or jealous animals that demand attention and want to remain close to their person.

Holly

Traditionally associated with feelings such as jealousy, anger, suspicion and resentment.

Larch

Often selected for animals lacking confidence or self-belief, particularly those that appear timid or unsure of themselves.

Aspen

Traditionally used for unexplained or generalised fears, particularly in animals that are easily startled by unfamiliar sounds or movements.

Beech

Used traditionally for animals that appear intolerant of certain people or other animals.

Centaury

Often selected for submissive or timid animals that may allow themselves to be dominated or picked on by other pets.

Cherry Plum

Traditionally associated with animals that appear highly reactive or unable to control their behaviour. It is sometimes selected for animals displaying destructive or self-directed behaviours.

Chestnut Bud

Traditionally used for animals that seem to have difficulty learning from previous experiences or repeatedly make the same mistakes.

Crab Apple

Traditionally associated with feelings of being unclean or uncomfortable with oneself and is sometimes included in blends following illness or other difficult experiences.

Mimulus

Often selected for specific, identifiable fears such as thunderstorms, fireworks, travelling or visits to the veterinarian.

Star of Bethlehem

Traditionally used for animals that have experienced trauma, shock or mistreatment. It may be considered for newly adopted rescue animals as they adjust to their new surroundings.

Vervain

Often selected for highly energetic, excitable or tense animals that seem to have difficulty settling.

Vine

Traditionally associated with animals that are strong-willed, controlling or inclined to dominate other animals.

Water Violet

Often selected for animals that are independent, aloof or prefer their own company.

Rescue Remedy (Crisis Remedy)

Rescue Remedy is a combination of flower essences traditionally used during times of shock, fear, stress or emotional upset.

It is commonly used as a supportive measure following stressful events such as accidents, injury, travel or other situations that may cause distress.

Flower Essences and Behavioural Problems

Flower essences may be used as part of a broader approach to behavioural issues such as fear, anxiety, possessiveness or aggression.

They should not be considered a replacement for appropriate behavioural training or professional help where required. For example, a dog that becomes aggressive following the introduction of a new pet may benefit from a combination of appropriate positive training techniques and support for their emotional wellbeing.

Flower essences are also sometimes selected for dogs experiencing separation anxiety, fear of thunderstorms and fireworks, possessiveness, timidity and other emotional challenges.

Supporting Rescue and Previously Mistreated Dogs

Dogs that have been abandoned, abused or mistreated may need time and patience to rebuild trust and confidence.

A calm environment, predictable routine, positive interactions and appropriate training are important foundations. Flower essences may be incorporated as an additional form of emotional support while the dog adjusts to its new circumstances.

Choosing a Flower Essence Blend

There are many different flower essences, and the most appropriate combination depends on the individual animal and the emotional issues they are experiencing.

Rather than choosing a remedy based solely on a particular behaviour, it can be useful to consider the dog's overall temperament, circumstances and emotional state.

If you would like an individual flower essence blend prepared for your dog, you can request an Emotional Consultation by completing our questionnaire.

Our animal naturopath can use Australian Bush Flower Essences and Bach Flower Essences to create a blend tailored to your animal's individual circumstances.

A Holistic Approach to Your Dog's Emotional Wellbeing

Dogs can be affected by changes, stress and emotional experiences just as humans can. Looking at the whole animal—including their environment, routine, relationships and behaviour—can help provide a more supportive approach.

Flower essences can be incorporated into this broader approach to emotional wellbeing, particularly when combined with patience, positive training and a supportive home environment.
