We all know the importance of clean water for ourselves, but did you know that your pet’s water quality matters just as much?
Just like humans, dogs and cats rely on fresh, safe water to support every system in their body, from digestion and joint function to temperature regulation and healthy organ function. But not all water is created equal, and the quality of what goes into their bowl can make a big difference to their long-term health.
Tap Water – What’s the Problem?
While tap water may seem like the easy option, it often contains added chemicals such as chlorine and fluoride*. Animals can be particularly sensitive, and the cumulative effect over time may place extra strain on their bodies, especially if they already have health issues.
The same concern applies to humans too. While some may feel these levels are acceptable, others prefer to reduce exposure where possible. In the end, it’s about making the choice that feels right for you and your animals.
Chlorine is used to kill bacteria in municipal water supplies, but it can disrupt the natural balance of good bacteria in your pet’s gut. Fluoride, while added to support dental health in people, is not necessary for pets and may have unintended effects when consumed daily over time.
*It’s also worth checking your local water source, as chemical levels and water treatment processes can vary greatly between towns and cities especially across Australia and in different parts of the world. What’s in your tap water may not be the same as what’s in someone else’s, even within the same state.
So, What Should Pets Drink?
Filtered water is a great starting point, especially if your local tap water has a strong chemical smell or taste. There are many affordable under the sink filter systems available through local suppliers, and they can make a big difference to the quality of your pet’s (and your own!) drinking water.
Alternatively, spring water or rainwater can be excellent natural options, just ensure it’s clean, fresh, and stored properly. Even with rainwater, we recommend using a filter system to remove any potential contaminants picked up from roofs, tanks, or pipes.
If your pet is on a natural or holistic diet, it makes sense to extend the same care to what they drink. Clean, chemical-free water supports detoxification, helps maintain energy levels, and keeps skin and coat health in balance.
How You Serve It Matters Too
Don’t forget the type of bowl your pet drinks from can impact both their water intake and overall wellness. Plastic bowls, for example, can harbour bacteria and leach chemicals over time. Stainless steel, ceramic, or non-toxic glass bowls are generally safer, more hygienic choices.
